The Mexican National Team, Lone Star Sports & Entertainment, Soccer United Marketing (SUM) and the Houston Dynamo announced today that Mexico will take on CONCACAF rival Honduras on Wednesday, July 1(9:30 p.m. ET) at Houston’s NRG Stadium as part of its 2015 U.S. Tour. The match, Mexico’s first in Houston since 2013, is presented by Allstate.
Both teams participated in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, and are expected to travel to Houston with their top players from the domestic league and abroad.
The July 1 match is crucial for head coach Miguel Herrera and his Gold Cup squad as they make final preparations for the bi-annual CONCACAF Gold Cup. As Herrera expressed in January during a press conference in Los Angeles, the Mexican National Team’s top priority in 2015 is taking home the Gold Cup title. Winning the championship would give El Tricolor the chance to face the United States in a play-in game to qualify for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Mexico’s last played in Houston on May 31, 2013, earning a 2-2 draw against Nigeria in front of more than 62,000 fans. Since 2010, NRG Stadium has hosted a number of marquee soccer matches, including the 2010 AT&T MLS All-Star Game against Manchester United and the 2011 CONCACF Gold Cup semifinals.
