Transfer Deadline MLS: Will Sporting Go Argentinian?

Peter VermesWith the transfer deadline closing Sporting Kansas City is looking to do some business to bolster their midfield and the target is San Lorenzo midfielder Sebastian Blanco.

A move such as this with a transfer fee is very rare from Sporting Kansas City who would rather wait til a player is out of contract before pulling the trigger.

While Seattle pulled their interest in the player as they signed Nicolas Lodeiro last week an Argentinian radio program stated that a bid was coming in from Sporting.

This is exceptionally rare as being at the MLS transfer deadline there is not a typical transfer from SKC in any form.

What the player does offer is a skill set as an attacking midfielder which would provide depth and quality to the squad in addition to being good playing off the wing.

For Sporting’s current needs the player sounds like an absolute dream.

Action from the wing has been anything but good for Sporting in 2016 and there is a list of reasons for that.

Lack of form, injuries, international duty, and lack of depth have meant that players have been played out of position to ensure that they would be able to have options.

Most of Blanco’s career has been in both Argentina with Lanus and currently San Lorenzo and in Ukraine with Metalist Kharkiv.

At 27 there is plenty in the legs and lets face it there would be a fourth Spanish speaker who could interact with the Hispanic community of Kansas City. In all honesty not since Omar Bravo has the Latin community of the city been banana’s for Sporting Kansas City. Something that has changed with the atmosphere at the stadium and the team winning trophies but when the most soccer mad of the communities that make up Kansas City are on the bottom rung when it comes to wealth it can be hard to galvanize the community to fully support the team.

A move like this would be Sporting taking a leaf out of the playoff sheet of the Kansas City Royals who made moves in 2014 and 2015 which ended up being key to their playoff runs which ended in two World Series appearances and one championship.

In the end Peter Vermes and Jake Reid will make the decisions that will dictate how the club attacks the remaining 10 league matches and four CONCACAF Champions League matches.
