Sporting KC Tuesday Thoughts

Matches are tricky when it comes to playing the reigning champions.

A Jacob Peterson second half goal was the difference maker as Sporting Kansas City earned themselves a nice three points on the Timbers.

Considering how wasteful each side was it is a miracle that the scoreline was only 1-0.

Sporting Kansas City finds themselves in position that seemed two months ago to be an unlikely outcome. Solidly in playoff position.

The only factor working against them is that they have played more matches than most in the conference due to freeing up their schedule for the Champions League campaign.

The good part is that at 1.417 points per match places Sporting still in the playoff hunt ahead of the likes of the Vancouver Whitecaps, San Jose Earthquakes, and the defeated Timbers.

Place this team in the Eastern Conference only three teams would have better points per match ratio as compared to four with teams also right behind.

The importance of the three points at home is with 10 matches to go as many points as possible need to be earned as the Champions League campaign has a home and home with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Sporting is making like the squirrel in the fall. Stockpiling for the end of the year.

U-13 Finishes Fourth in Champions League

Sporting’s U-13 team was invited to participate in the CONCACAF U-13 Champions League where the squad was able to reach the semifinals before falling to Guatemalan squad Comunicaciones.

For the squad to have gotten to this phase against talent from all over the region is a massive opportunity for every player involved and gives regional plaudits to the academy.

Dom Dwyer Staying or Going?

Middle of last week there was rumor that a bid had come in for the leading scorer for Sporting Kansas City and Peter Vermes addressed this by saying that the club rejected the offer.

Start of the weekend and in Greece Dwyer was on the cover of Sports Day, a sports newspaper in Greece.

Should this actually be happening it is because the club realizes that money talks and Olympiacos, reigning champions of Greece are regulars in the Champions League.

For Dwyer it would result in his quest to suit up for the USMNT to be at least on hold as he still requires an additional year before he can make the change.

Swope Park Rangers 2 San Antonio 1

Second straight win for the Rangers and up the standings they go.

The trajectory is up and so are the possibilities going forward.

Shame that the success of late is mostly done with only Jon Kempin in goal or the Academy players and on loan players.

For Kempin getting the consistent playing time is massive though the question must be raised; When if ever does he move up to the senior side for good?
