Nice Valley, France- Sweden had five different goal scorers that contributed to their 5-1 victory over Thailand in their second match of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Chaba Kaew also scored their first goal in the tournament. This was Sweden’s second win.

“It’s good that we had five different scorers. I felt that we found a number of avenues to break through and overall it was a good match,” said midfielder Kosavare Asllani. “I think the further we go in the tournament, the tougher the teams [will be], so it was positive we could create a lot in the last third. It was a decent performance and now we just want to focus on the USA, that’s the next game.”

Sweden saw the back of the net early on as midfielder Elin Rubensson sent a free-kick to the box. Rubensson set up defender Linda Sembrant as she finished the ball with a powerful header to the back of the net. Sembrandt set a new record in the tournament with the earliest goal to be scored at 5 minutes and 24 seconds.

Lina Hurtig sent a header to Thailand’s goalkeeper Waraporn Boonsing, and although it was deflected, Sweden used it to their advantage. Midfielder Kosavare Asllani swept up the ball and cut past Thailand’s defense to put the Blagult up 2-0.

Thailand conceded the third goal in the first half as Fridolina Rolfo sent the ball to the back of the net above the box. Although Thailand was down 3-0, their defense put pressure on Sweden to make the clearances.

Sweden’s second-half performance showed more of their physical dominance on the ball and used this to their advantage. Hurtig took a chance from a ball on a cross and headed it in for their fourth goal.

Thailand’s response to this 4-0 lead saw another opportunity on goal in the first minute of stoppage time. Midfielder Kanjana Sung-Ngoen faced goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl head on and put the first goal for Thailand on the board.

To conclude their performance, Sweden finished out strong on a penalty kick that was confirmed by VAR. All eyes were now on Rubensson as she extended Balgult’s lead 5-1.

Sweden now prepare to face the U.S, who are also tied with six points, on Thursday, June 20 to see who will move on. The match will be aired live at 12 p.m. PST on Fox.
