An apparent Union own-goal made the difference between a draw and a loss in the chippy game last Sunday afternoon. The Union lineup had a few new faces, given that Captain Alejandro Bedoya and goal scorer Kacper Przybylko sat out the last regular season game. Ilsinho started along with Andrew Wooten.
NYCFC’s first goal came early, at the seventh minute mark, off a shot by New York City’s Ronald Matarrita, assisted by Valentín Castellanos and Ben Sweat. The second came in the twenty second minute, and was credited to NYCFC’s Ismael Tajouri-Shradi, although to many it looked like an own-goal that popped off the head of Philadelphia’s Jamiro Monteiro and lobbed just over Andre Blake’s outstretched hands.
As the subs, including Marco Fabian, entered the game in the second half, the Union was awarded a penalty kick in the eighty seventh minute. Fabian was quick to run to the mark and successfully accounted for the Union’s lone goal.
