A steamy night, and threatening skies couldn’t stop history from happening at Target Field in Minneapolis. For the first time ever a soccer match was played at the young stadium in from of 18,000+ fans.
Minnesota United came into their match against Liga MX’s Club Léon with a chip on their shoulder. To start the match, the Loons got a few early opportunities to challenge Léon goalkeeper. Ramirez had a great look at goal, but his header sailed wide.
Léon took a 1-0 lead following a Germán Cano goal in the 25th minute. The Loons held strong until the beginning of the second half when the side gave up an own goal to extend the Léon lead to 2-0. Then came the came back.
Behind goals from Christian Ramirez and J.C Banks, United evened up with the score at 2-2 heading into the last 20 minutes. But Club Leon survived the onslaught and scored 2 additional goals to seal the victory.
Minnesota United begins the Fall NASL Season against the Carolina Railhawks this Saturday. Carolina finished 7th in the table, but beat the Loons in the opening match of the season.
