Fresh off a 1-1 draw in Atlanta where the Sounders played down a man for 42 minutes. The Sounders gave a crisp professional performance securing three points at home in their 2-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The match in Atlanta featured the supporters shield leaders Atlanta United vs the Sounders coming off a win and a draw in their last two matches. The game played as part of a broadcast doubleheader with the world cup final drew the biggest crowd in MLS regular season history. The match went how you would expect with the Sounders happy to concede possession and try to catch the 5 stripes on the break. The plan worked for the Sounders as they were given a penalty kick chance after VAR ruled in their favor. Loderio converted the penalty to give Seattle the lead.
The Sounders were unbeaten in three matches when they took on the Whitecaps in a heritage match on a bright Saturday afternoon at Centurylink. The match started bright for Seattle after a handball in the box earned the Sounders just their second penalty of the season and the second in two matches. Loderio converted the penalty and the Sounders were up 1-0 after just 4 minutes. The Sounders continued on the front foot with a confidence that had been sorely lacking thru the first half of the season.
The teams traded yellow cards a minute with both Henry for the whitecaps and Nouhou picking up yellow cards for fouls. Noco put in a second goal in the 30th minute with a bending shot that fooled the Whitecaps keeper. That would be all they would need.
The Whitecaps thought they had earned a penalty with a handball in the box at the stroke of half time but after consulting VAR referee Chris Penso waved off the penalty. 2-0 at the half.
The second half had the Sounders newest signing Raul Ruidiaz, who came on in the 60th minute. All hope the Whitecaps had of getting into the matched ended after Kamara and Juarez were each shown yellow cards three minutes apart. with the later a confrontation with Penso. Juarez was shown red and the Whitecaps finished the match a man down. A clean sheet from the defense helped secure a much needed three points and unbeaten in 4 the Sounders will head to San Jose to take on the struggling Earthquakes in a midweek game.
