Toronto FC might not be defending their MLS Cup title in this year’s playoffs but on Sunday they certainly showed that they weren’t going to end the season on a down note. In their season finale at BMO Field The Reds ended the season with a bang, defeating Atlanta United 4-1.

Lucas Janson (9′) and Marky Delgado (21′) gave the home side a very early lead sending the presumptive Supporters Shield champions into a bit of a tailspin. Josef Martinez made things interesting late with his goal in the 77th minute. But Toronto slammed the door shut on any comeback attempt with goals from Janson (83′) and Sebastian Giovinco (88′).

For Atlanta the loss means that they were not able to capture their first-ever trophy. They enter the MLS Cup Playoffs as the number two seed and with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. It should be noted that they have yet to win a game in the playoffs in their very brief history.

As for Toronto the win certainly doesn’t erase the sour feelings of being unable to defend their MLS Cup title in the playoffs. While winning the Canadian Championship and nearly winning the CONCACAF Champions League are certainly some good highlights, coach Greg Vanney will certainly be looking to tweak the roster with the aim of getting back at the top of the league’s pecking order.
