Vancouver Whitecaps 4-2 LA Galaxy
VANCOUVER, BC–The Vancouver Whitecaps made it back-to-back wins with a 4-2 decision over LA Galaxy. With the win, the Whitecaps moved up to seventh in the Western Conference table while Galaxy, who saw their seven-match unbeaten streak snapped in the loss–remain consigned to 13th in the West and seven points adrift of a playoff spot heading into Leagues Cup play.
Once again, the Whitecaps got off to a fast start requiring just two minutes when Ryan Raposo sent a cross into the box that was headed in by Brian White for the opening score. It would only be eight minutes later when Vancouver doubled their advantage after Chris Mavinga misplayed a cross right to Ryan Gauld who first-timed into the upper 90. It got worse for the Galaxy by the 23rd minute, Mavinga would be sent off for a second yellow after taking down Gauld in the box. Gauld converted the ensuing spot kick to make it 3-0.
However, the Galaxy would make a comeback starting in the 61st minute. Gaston Brugman put in Riqui Puig’s corner on the volley to pull one back. Then, ten-man Galaxy pulled to within 3-2 as Mark Delgado nutmegged Yohei Takaoka in the 74th minute with a shot. However, that would be as close as they got as Sergio Cordova put the game on ice with virtually the last kick of the game.
