Vancouver Whitecaps 2-2 DC United
VANCOUVER, BC–The Whitecaps’ first home league match since August 20th ended in a 2-2 draw with DC United and another missed opportunity to move up the Western Conference table with results elsewhere in their favor. As it stands, the Whitecaps are in sixth place, still three points adrift of second-place Seattle, and five points clear of the playoff line. Meanwhile, DC remain on the outside looking in in tenth place in the East behind CF Montreal on wins with points identical.
The Whitecaps got off to a fast start with Ryan Gauld sending a looping ball to Brian White who headed home in the second minute. DC were gifted an equalizer just nine minutes later when Yohei Takaoka’s pass was intercepted by Theo Ku-DiPetro who feed Christian Bentenke for an easy finish.
The Whitecaps regained the lead from the spot in the 57th minute after VAR determined White was fouled in the area by DC’s Pedro Santos. Gauld converted the spot kick to restore Vancouver’s advantage. That advantage lasted just four minutes as Mateusz Klich would score off the half volley from outside the area to make it 2-2.
In the end, it’s a draw that doesn’t really help either team, but doesn’t hurt that much either given results elsewhere. The Whitecaps host West leaders St. Louis CITY SC on Wednesday (7:30pm PT, Apple TV).
