Juan David Mosquera is the newest Portland Timber. At 19 years of age, the fullback comes to Portland after three seasons at Deportivo Independiente Medellin in the Colombian League. The native of Cali, Colombia registered three goals and three assists in 59 appearances across all competitions.
He made his professional debut at 17 years old on February 7, 2020 against Patriotas Boyaca, playing the full 90 minutes of this match. His arrival will give depth and strength in the defensive backfield as well be accompanied by four of his countrymen.
In the Rose City, the development and skills growth of Mosquera will be just Santiago Moreno making the jump from the bench to an indisputable starter, looking ahead of this young man’s talent and desires of being another stand out.
With El Poderoso de la Montaña or the Mighty of the Mountain, the man featured in Copa Colombia, Copa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores tournaments. In 2022, the young defender started in seven of eight appearances, including a 90-minute performance for Independiente Medellin in Copa Sudamericana adding to another stellar performance in Copa Colombia against Tigres in a 2-1 win.
For manager Giovanni Savarese, he’s looking forward to develop this lad skills and making him ready to make his debut with the Timbers. On the international level, Mosquera appeared with the Colombian U-17 Mens National Team at the 2019 South American Championships held at Lima, Peru and named to Colombia’s U-20 training camps.
His pass is pending a physical as well signed for the 2026 and with the option for the 2027 season. He will occupy an international and U-22 Initiative Slot, waiting for his receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa.
He will join the likes of Diego Chara, Yimmi Chara, Dairon Aspirilla and Santiago Moreno, making the Timbers Los Cafeteros or Tricolor a moniker given to the Colombian National Team.
