Portland Timbers owner Merrit Paulson is dead serious on making his squad a contender in 2018. The Rose City side seems to be taking full advantage of Major League Soccer transfer market window which opened on July 10. The Timbers directives made it official today of announcing their newest member to call Portland home, Tomas Conechny.
Conechny, a 20-year-old attacking midfielder comes to the Timbers from Superliga de Argentina side San Lorenzo. With the option to buy, Conechny’s signing is contingent upon him passing his physical and the receipt international Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa. He would occupy one of the Timber’s international spots.
He is the seventh Argentinian to play for the Portland Timbers. Tomas will be joining his compatriots Sebastian Blanco and Diego Valeri both of whom have been important and vital for Portland’s success in the campaign. The hopes is that he can become a vital piece and adapt immediately to manager Gio Savarese’s current project.
Portland Timbers General Manger Gavin Wilkinson has a sharp eye for talent so something in Conechny must have really caught his eye and attention. That he lured the young Argentinian to play for Portland and joined one of the hottest tickets currently in MLS.
Conechny comes with an impressive career from San Lorenzo, with 14 appearances since 2016. At the international level has earned 21 caps with La Albiceleste with seven goals in the youth levels. In 2015 he participated U-17 Sudamericano, U-17 FIFA World Cup and in 2017 U-20 Sudamericano and U-20 FIFA World Cup. With the U-17, he had 10 appearances and six goals and the U-20 he averaged 11 appearances and one goal.
With his youth, hunger and ambition, he may very well become an immediate success in the Portland initial eleven. He also comes on a loan with an option to buy which gives Portland a real chance to see what he can do. Suerte Che!
