Washington Men score two second half goals, hold on to beat Central Arkansas

Seattle, WA – In the first meeting between the two programs, the Washington Huskies were able to use a strong second half to defeat the Central Arkansas Bears. The Huskies were not as dominant in this match as perhaps they would have liked to be, narrowly winning in the shots department and allowing a late goal. The Huskies move to a 2-0 record on the season, and continue through their non-conference schedule.

Newer faces find the back of the net

While midfielder Christian Soto recorded a brace in the last match, the PAC-12 Player of the week was quieter in this contest. Defender Ilijah Paul and midfielder Nick Scardina were the ones that got on the board for Washington in this one. Over the course of two minutes, the Huskies were able to build a lead.

Washington defender Chris Myers sent a great cross into the box for Ilijah Paul, threading the needle between two Central Arkansas defenders. Paul would remain active in the Husky attack, finding midfielder Nick Scardina outside of the box just over a minute later. Scardina would fire a first touch shot past Central Arkansas Zach Schawl, giving Washington a two-goal lead. The variety of scorers for the Huskies is a positive sign to the continuation of Washington’s success.

Late goal almost creates worry

Immediately following the chaotic two goal stretch for Washington, the Bears of Central Arkansas were able to find somewhat of an answer. Rubyn Gill found the back of the net a minute after the goal by Scardina, immediately putting some pressure on the third ranked team in the nation. Off of a throw in, Gill punched the ball home and it seemed like the Huskies may be in a bit of trouble.

After the 68th minute goal, the Bears were only able to create two shots, only one of which was on target. The Huskies and keeper Sam Fowler were able to keep the Bears in check, and avoid an early season upset during their non-conference schedule.  Washington is able to continue it’s strong run, but perhaps more scoring from other members of the team would be helpful. This, especially considering these non-conference opponents.

What’s next?

The Huskies next match comes on Friday, September 2nd against Utah Valley. Washington continues their non-conference schedule with a 7:30PM PST kickoff, remaining at home as they take on the unranked Wolverines.
