Vancouver Whitecaps face their Canadian rivals Montreal Impact Wednesday night, the first in a series of five back-to-back away matches.
It is the first and only league match they will play at the Stade Saputo this season, however they do travel east to face the same side in the First Leg of the Amway Canadian Championship final.
Some could consider this a warm up match for what they will face in August in the final, but form wise, the two matches will ultimately tell a different story.
Whitecaps Amway Championship campaign has been jittery and less cohesive than normal. A blend of youth players were called up to play the cup matches unlike the league.
Vancouver’s MLS league form has been stuttering of late despite a magnificent win against RSL at home this weekend. But the white and navy are still floating around the top positions of the Western Conference largely relying on a brilliant start to the season.
Montreal on the other hand have been poor in league play, and have played far less games due to their CONCACAF Champions League obligations. The reigning Canadian champions made a magnificent run making the final before ultimately succumbing to the superior Mexican side.
The switch in focus has meant that Montreal are five games behind in the Eastern Conference with just eight points in ninth position.
There will be a familiar face in the Montreal line up in the way of Nigel Reo-Coker. The former England international and youth team captain was the leader for the Whitecaps up until mid way through last season before being sent to Chivas USA in a trade that brought Mauro Rosales up the I-5 to Vancouver. Chivas USA folded allowing Montreal to pick up Reo-Coker’s playing rights.
Vancouver’s away form has been magnificent so Montreal will be wary of a potent counter attack that they possess with the likes of Kekuta Manneh, Octavio Rivero, and captain Pedro Morales leading the ‘Caps on the break
