El Maestro is back, and no one could be happier than the Portland Timbers, the team fanbase, his family, and especially Diego Valeri himself that he and his family found a home in Rose City.
For one of the club’s utmost of playmakers and Talisman, Diego Valeri is relieved that negotiations came to a positive ending after things reached difficult levels at times, but in the end, these came to a joyful ending.
Coming back is a great feeling for midfielder Diego Valeri as well confirmed and reciprocated by both Timbers GM and President of Soccer Operations Gavin Wilkinson and manager Giovanni Savarese.
“From a club perspective and I know from a fan perspective, we’re all delighted he’s back,” Wilkinson said. “What he’s done for this club and what he will continue to do is remarkable. It’s the person, it’s the player, it’s the complete package along with the family.”
“It was a priority for us to make sure that he stayed,” said Savarese. “We were looking for the right way to for him to be able to stay here with this club that he’s given so much and the club that has given so much to him. We felt that he needed to continue here — also for his family — and I’m glad personally that found a way to make that happen.”
In his career span with the Portland Timbers, Diego Valeri joined the club back in 2013 and has become the club leading man, setting several records and contributing for this team success since his debut.
For the 33-year old Argentinian, he has set a record of goals scored (76), assists (81) and points (233) during his MLS era. In 2017, he won the League MVP, MLS All-Star four times, and three time MLS Best XI honoree.
The man became fundamental in helping the Portland Timbers win the 2015 MLS Cup, MLS Cup MVP following Portland’s 2-1 win over the Columbus Crew, scoring the first goal early in the game.

“You all know that my daughter, this place is her home,” Valeri said, “and for my wife, she is in love with the community, with this city and with the club so we are very happy about it.”
