Philadelphia, PA
A record-setting crowd of 49,504 cheered on the United States Women’s National Team in its Victory Tour game against Portugal at Lincoln Financial Field last night. The USWNT beat Portugal by a score of 4-0.
The game did not resemble the World Cup games, nor was that its purpose. Rather, the game represented the opportunity to pay homage to the team’s achievements. Some of the stars of summer rested, while local heroes Carli Lloyd (Delran,N.J.) and Julie Ertz (No. 1 fan of Philadelphia Eagles tight end, Zach Ertz) played the entire game.
The scoring started early as Tobin Heath tapped in a cross from Christen Press in the 4th minute. Moments later, in the 18th minute, Morgan Brian scored on a header, off of a corner by Press. Carli Lloyd scored at the 52nd minute off of a Horan header and Allie Long scored off of an assist by Lloyd. The USWNT total goals could have been more lopsided still, had goals by Heath and Press not been disallowed.
