After a dominating first half performance The New York Red Bulls lost in Chester, Pennsylvania to the Philadelphia Union. The first half saw the Red Bulls record the first goal, a volley by Mike Grella. The Red Bulls ended up recording 13 shots in that first half, meanwhile the Union were only able to record 1.
The second half was a different story, however. The Union came to life and scored 2 goals, and became eventual winners 2-1. Red Bull coach Jesse Marsch ended up being sent off in the waning minutes after getting into a heated argument with the referee. He felt the referee had given the Union too many foul calls, and was favoring the home team. In the end he had reason to be upset, as it seemed some questionable calls were given late in the game. The foul count was 14-12, with the Union suffering two more fouls than the Red Bulls in total. This may not paint the whole picture, however, as each foul should be given in context.
The Union moves on to the quarterfinals to play The New England Revolution on Wednesday, July 20th at 7:30 PM EST.
