Who: United States vs. Netherlands
When: December 3, 2022, 10 a.m. ET
Where: Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar
The United States Men’s National Team are back in the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time since 2014 and face off against another side that failed to qualify for the tournament in 2018, the Netherlands. It will be the first time either of these nations have met at a men’s World Cup.
The United States arrived in the knockout stage after coming in second in Group B with five points. Draws against Wales and England in their first two matches forced the United States to win their final match in the Group Stage against Iran, which they did 1-0 behind Christian Pulisic’s 38th minute crotch-goal.
Josh Sargent is going to be a match-day decision due to his ongoing injury, per manager Gregg Berhalter. Sargent started and played more than 70 minutes in the matches against Iran and Wales. He also came on late as a substitute in the draw against England.
Berhalter also has a decision to make at center back: Walker Zimmerman or Cameron Carter-Vickers. Zimmerman started the two draws and was a crucial substitute late as a third defender in the win versus Iran. Carter-Vickers’ start and finish in the Iran match was his only appearance in the World Cup, though nothing from his performance against Iran would demand that he go back to the bench.
The Netherlands qualified for the knockout rounds of the World Cup after winning Group A with seven points. Their 1-1 draw with Ecuador was sandwiched 2-0 victories over Senegal and Qatar, respectively. Cody Gakpo, who plays for PSV in the Eredivisie, has scored a goal in each of Netherlands’ matches.
There has been an illness going around the Dutch camp this week, forcing them out of their normal pre-match routine ahead of their match against the Americans.
The match will be broadcast in English on Fox and in Spanish on Telemundo.
