The United States eked out a 1-0 victory this weekend in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By getting a result in the final game, USA gained a berth in the knockout round of the Copa America Centenario. To the surprise of many, the yanks not only qualified, but also topped group A, with Costa Rica taking down Colombia’s “B” team.
The Red, White and Blue took the lead in the first half off a Clint Dempsey goal, assisted by Gyasi Zardes. As the game drew on, US defender DeAndre Yedlin received two bookable offenses in the span of one minute, forcing the US to sit back and defend their lead for the remaining 40 minutes, which, thanks to John Brooks, Geoff Cameron and Brad Guzan, was done successfully
