STARTERS
McCarthy 7.0 Another start and McCarthy continues to show that he is the GK of the future with the Union. Yes, he made some mistakes this game but he takes pride in his play. He can’t be held at fault for the goals scored against him in this fixture. He will learn as the season goes on that he is the “man” in the back and the one controlling the defensive line.
Edu 7.5 Was very sound both defensively and offensively this game. Over the past several games he has been able to jump into the play on offense and be at the right place at the right time. This game was no different. He is a leader on the field and once Curtain buttons down his line up Maurice will be right in the middle of it. A very solid performance against NE
Vitoria 6.5 Another game with a solid defensive showing, but not enough in the box and sticking close when it counted. He was caught watching when he should have been sliding over to mark the danger man (Bunbury) and it made the difference in the game.
Gaddis 6.0 Sometimes gets caught up field and loses contact on defense. Speed is not always the answer as he cannot compensate when the ball is turned over against an equally speedy attacker.
Maidana 8.0 Chaco with intensity at both ends of the field and worked the midfield without flaw against a solid NE midfield side. He was always there and when he is back to 100% fitness he will be one of the Union players to make a difference as the season progresses.
Williams 6.5 Another example of getting caught out of position. And even though his long throw in is a weapon, the question remains how often has the team capitalized versus giving up a goal instead. Not effective against NE.
Sapong 7.5 C.J. was subbed in last week against NYCFC and made a difference. In Sunday’s game against NE he played a solid attacking game with the confidence to come back to help out on defense. He took some hard knocks but was always there. Look for him to put one in the back of the net against Columbus next week.
Aristeguieta 7.5 Big bold and strong in the box. Always plays well with his back to goal and can turn quickly creating danger.
Le Toux 7.5 The Union version of the French Foreign Legion. Solid as usual. It is hard to make negative criticism when a player like Sebastian shows up week after week nicked up or not, BUT is ready to give it his all. Pairs well with Aristeguieta
Pfeffer 6.5 Zack may have been thinking about joining up with the U-20’s and looked lost at times. He is a better player than that. The training with the U-20’s should help his play which in turn will contribute to the Union getting some W’s.
LaHoud 7.0 He continues to impress as a starter. Although he may not have the skills of other midfielders he is nonetheless fearless playing with a big heart. Definitely a solid contributor.
SUBSTITUTES:
Wenger > 6.0 Sub Does anyone wonder when he will show up and play? These runs down the wing are on every opponents scouting report. He must not think as much, preferring instead to distributing or taking the shot using his instincts
Carrol > 6.5 Sub Is still looking weak. Not enough PT to get back to form and accept his role coming off the bench late in games to impact the game.
Casey > 6.5 Sub Was brought in late in the game and was involved in a late game scrum in the 6 yard box, but he couldn’t make an impact.
