Colorado Rapids 1-2 Philadelphia Union

COMMERCE CITY, CO–Colorado Rapids had a one-goal lead get away against the Philadelphia Union, and then things really got away towards the end in a match that saw nine yellow cards and two reds. The Rapids were awarded a penalty in the 38th minute after VAR determined the Union’s Damion Lowe had fouled Diego Rubio just inside the box. Connor Ronan converted the spot kick to put Colorado ahead.

Philadelphia responded just before halftime as Kai Wagner blasted the equalizer from 25 yards out to make it 1-1. Seven minutes into the second half, Jack McGlynn fed Julian Carranza whose shot just got by William Yarbrough to put the Union ahead what would be for good.

Tempers frayed towards the end of the match, towards the end of what was supposed to be six minutes of stoppage time after the Rapids’ Michael Barrios shoved Andre Blake into the boards. A major scuffle would ensue. Barrios was shown yellow as was the Union’s Jack Elliott and Jakob Glesnes, while the Rapids’ Braian Galvan and the Union’s Jesus Bueno were shown red. Twenty seconds after showing Bueno the red (after VAR review), referee Victor Rivas blew the final whistle.

The Rapids drop to tenth in the West with the loss while the Union climb to fifth in the East with the win.
