[Update: By Wednesday morning, Merritt Paulson’s tweet was deleted.]
Portland Timbers will be transporting their now famous log of Oregon wood to the MLS Cup Final in Ohio.
Timbers mascot Timber Joey will be able to saw a slice off the log in Columbus as he does at Portland’s home games but not actually inside the confines of MAPFRE Stadium.
On Tuesday evening, Portland owner Merritt Paulson spoke to Daimler Benz who agreed to drive “The Log” across the country to the MLS Cup, if no plane could be found to take the 8ft by 2ft piece of wood.
Daimler trucks are made in Portland.
Paulson had apparently seen our earlier article about Joey’s predecessor Timber Jim where he had offered to drive it there himself if Columbus Crew would permit it entry to the ground
The trademark chainsaw will not be allowed into the stadium but according to a tweet by Paulson it will be at TA tailgate and may be available post game depending on results.
Clearly Paulson’s bold move will add pressure to MLS and MAPFRE Stadium to allow it inside.
One way or another, the log itself will be among friends with over 1000 Timbers fans expected to travel.
