It was a beautiful Sunday in the rose city as the Portland Timbers took on the Vancouver Whitecaps in their second meeting of the year. The Timbers Army displayed a four banner TIFO featuring Diego Chara, Bill Tuiloma, and Sebastian Blanco in honor of this Cascadia rivalry match. Portland, fresh off of another Cascadia victory with a 3-0 win over Seattle last weekend, played with the same 4-2-3-1 formation as in Seattle but without midfielder Eryk Williamson, who was out due to yellow card accumulation.
Play during the first half was chippy with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. In the 10th minute Timbers #30 Santiago Moreno sent a shot straight to Vancouver’s third string keeper, Isaac Boehmer. In the 32nd minute, Vancouver found the back of the net with a header by Brian White. The Timbers continued to push looking for a response to Vancouver with Diego Chara and Claudio Bravo both getting shots blocked in the 37th minute. Timbers defender Jose Carlos Van Rankin was given a yellow card for a handsy foul in the 43rd minute. Portland ended the half down 0-1.
The second half of the match picked up right where it had left off. Vancouver started their attack right away with a shot by White saved in the 46th minute. Lucas Cavallini and Ryan Raposo picked up yellow cards for Vancouver in the 46th and 48th minute. Portland countered Vancouver’s attack with three shots on goal in the first ten minutes of the second half. In the 50th minute Sebastian Blanco’s shot in the upper box was saved by Boehmer.
In the 60th minute the Timbers’ manager, Giovanni Savarese, was shown a yellow card for arguing with the referee. The Timbers made their first substitution in the 71st minute bringing on Bill Tuiloma for Van Rankin and Felipe Mora in for Christian Parades. Mora drew a foul in the penalty area in the 81st minute and took the penalty shot to tie the match in front of a loud and rowdy Timbers Army. The Timbers ended the match with two more yellow cards shown to Dario Zuparic and Blanco.
