Tijuana Xolos defeated the current Liga MX league leaders Toluca FC on Friday evening at Estadio Caliente and jumped over Toluca to claim the top spot for themselves. The Xoloitzcuintles played to a 2-0 win over Toluca with goals from San Diego’s Joe Corona and Argentine midfielder Ignacio Malcorra, who also had the assist in the Corona opener.
The win and three points plus the combination of results on Saturday evening allowed Xolos to be the first team to have officially secured a spot in the Liga MX playoffs. Xolos will close out the regular season by visiting Tigres UANL and hosting Veracruz.
CF Monterrey defeated cross town rivals and reigning Liga MX champions Tigres UANL on Saturday evening. Monterrey improved to second place of the table with 27 points, just one shy of Xolos’ 28. Both Tijuana and Monterrey will battle out the top spot of the table in the remaining two matches.
Xolos finished the previous 2016 Apertura season in first place of the table and now look close to securing another league leading finish for a second consecutive season. The Tijuana side now have to be considered among the prime candidates to win the Liga MX title.
