Matildas show spirit in come-from-behind win.

Brazil went off to a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Marta and Cristiane before Caitlin Foord pulled on back before halftime, Chloe Logarzo equalized on an improbable shot from midfield that was misjudged by Barbara, and then an own goal gave Australia the win and a great chance to advance to the next stage. It is only the second time in Women’s World Cup history that a team has rallied from two goals down to win (Sweden over Germany in 1995). What does it mean for Australia?

1. This was the result they needed.

Chances are, Australia would have faced an early exit if they fell to Brazil and the omens were not good after going 2-0 down. Caitlin Foord’s strike before halftime was the boost that Australia needed and Brazil’s defense continued to panic in the second half. So instead of starting a early elimination, they are looking more likely to advancing to the knockout stage with Jamaica ahead on Tuesday in Grenoble.

2. They are still in third in the group

Ah yes, Brazil’s goal difference and Italy still to play Jamaica on Friday means that Australia will likely be third in Group C. However, destiny to advance is in their hands now and victory over Jamaica should be enough either for top two or as one of the four-best third place teams.

3. There is offense besides Kerr

Sam Kerr was not on the scoresheet in this one and the Matildas still won. Kerr nearly got a head on Logarzo’s shot and was in the picture on the match winner which was the Monica own goal. Kerr continues to be the main presence in attack, but for others to contribute such as Foord and Logarzo is a positive sign for the Matildas going forward.

The Plus One:  Coming up on Tuesday

As mentioned, Australia will play Jamaica (FS2) in Grenoble while Brazil plays Italy in Valencienne (FS1) at 2pm CT. A Matildas win will more than likely see them in the next stage and depending how Brazil and Italy play out, maybe as a top two team.
