The Portland Thorns brought the preseason to an end with a win 1-0 against the Chicago Red Stars at Providence Park. The match was the last rehearsal ahead of the start of the NWSL Challenge Cup next week, and saw the teams play already at regular season intensity. Nevertheless, Portland dominated the match and had the most chances, specially during the first half. Christine Sinclair and Sophia Smith clicked on the attack and Smith turned into an authentic nightmare to the Red Stars defense. Smith’s dribble ability and pace keep opening opportunities, but the match would go to half time with a scoreless draw.
Second half started to see the usual parade of substitutions, but didn’t impact the match dynamic. Portland dominated, and in the 73rd minute, Sam Coffey picked up a loose ball after Sophia Smith strike that hit the woodwork. Chicago tried and had their chance but found Thorns defense well organized and a solid Abby Smith at the goal.
Next, the Portland Thorns will travel to Lumen Field to face OL Reign for group B match up in NWSL Challenge Cup. Chicago Red stars will open theirs participation at PNC Stadium against the Houston Dash.
