So far, the Portland Timbers are making the right moves in the preseason and in the winter. This time, extending Giovanni Savarese’s coaching core to an extension of their contracts. In addition, they are welcoming a new member in former Timber great and former center back Liam Ridgewell.
Ridgewell joins Carlos Llamosa, Miles Joseph, and Guillermo “Memo” Valencia on Savarese’s technical staff.
Llamosa, Joseph, Valencia will go into their sixth season with the club in 2023. The trio has been active since the arrival of Gio at Rose City and been vital for the success of the club under his guidance.
They have won two berths in the MLS Cup (2018, 2021), winning the MLS Conference Championship in both of those seasons. In addition to their five seasons with the club, the Timbers have made it into the postseason (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021) and winning the 2020 MLS Is Back Tournament.
Ridgewell holds his UEFA B Coaching License and will begin his first season as part of the coaching staff. As the men in his time at Rose City, he came as a Designated Player in 2014, in addition of being in 12 seasons in the English Premier League and English Football League.
His career in EPL spanned with 200 appearances for Aston Villa, Birmingham City, and West Bromwich Albion. Last season he became a play-by-play announcer with the Portland Timbers and for the 2023 season he joins the coaching staff.
