The state of Chicago soccer

THOUGHTS ON THE FIRE: It’s matches like last Saturday’s for the Fire that make you wonder if they will win another game this season. A loss against RSL on Saturday will set a record for the club’s longest losing streak. Yet, they will likely go all in for the US Open Cup to save their season. It’s really hard to be optimistic about the Chicago Fire right now. I’ll likely have to say this many times between now and after the final day of league play, but a lot of what’s going on right now falls squarely on the shoulders of Nelson Rodriguez.

THOUGHTS ON THE RED STARS: What was supposed to be the penultimate home match for the Red Stars got postponed as Sky Blue’s flight to Chicago got canceled. The people you have to feel for are the five national team replacements for the Red Stars who were preparing for this match with Casey Short, Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher, and Morgan Brian with the US National Team and Sam Kerr with Australia.

After three sequences with three matches in a week, it will be a span of 27 days between matches as the next match is scheduled for August 10th at home to leaders North Carolina.
