Many questions arise after the official announcement that Lucas Melano making his return to Portland. Is his arrival an opportune one, after all the dilemma of a front man finally solved? Not until the man adapts to his new surroundings and especially his new manager. For Giovanni Savarese going to a situation of who will be the ideal man to lead his attack along with Samuel Armenteros.
Still for Lucas Melano he needs to adapt to the Timbers game plan and strategies currently instituted by Gio. As a professional he is, I do not have any doubts of his immediate adaptation to this new Portland Timbers. As their new man in its helm sends on game day, is one master of putting on game day many multiple formations. Here he can play in a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2.
The plus for Lucas is that he will have a couple of playmakers in Sebastian Blanco and Diego Valeri calling the shoots and maybe this time is the charm for him. By the way he is familiar with these two and the dynamic those two bring to the field. Benefiting immensely the offensive attack and maybe he can make a one two in a new frontal attack, as Gio maybe preparing to use him in the remainder of the campaign.
The plus for Lucas is that Giovanni Savarese closeness to his players. This is one amazing ingredient for a player to succeed in the field. With Gio making a good rapport with Lucas, maybe we can see his game upgraded a bit to succeed. Despite the excitement, this man comes loaded, maybe now he will experience a new system in this new Portland squad.
Still there are no guarantees of netting a sure starting spot that easily. He will face a heavy competition among Dairon Aspirilla, Jeremy Ebobisse and among his compatriot in newcomer Tomas Conechny. However, the competition possibly can bring the best of his game afloat and be of such value in the final stages of this campaign.
In his time in Argentina’s Primera Division he matured more as a player, good judgment as well expanding his criterion in his game. As the possibilities of him becoming a strong winger to accompany Samuel Armenteros is one immediate solution of his return. As a forward or winger, Lucas in his time in Portland was part of many notable plays.
The pressure he endured in 2016 as a starter and being in front of the goal many times and not defining was one disappointing by many here in Portland. That led to his two-year loan to a couple of clubs in his native country’s first division. The hope is that through his travels that a new Melano will emerge who can be a total standout in the field and make it merry.
In his two-year absence Lucas Melano played on a loan with Atletico Belgrano were he participated in fifteen games with no goals. In 2017-18 he moved to Estudiantes de La Plata playing 20 games and scoring three goals. In his time, the man participated in Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana these two competitions equivalent of South America’s Champions League.
