The Portland Timbers leave Colorado with their third straight loss and several unanswered questions

Dominique Badji’s injury-time goal before the end of the first half along with Diego Rubio’s score in the second half were enough to seal their team a berth in the Western Conference playoffs with a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers and their 12th shoutout of the season at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Contrary to the Portland Timbers coming to tonight’s match with several questions about their defensive game, another red flag was raised on their attack being quiet. Still, the defensive game has become the topic for these embattled Timbers now seeing their losing streak stretching to three games.

With the return of Diego Valeri to the starting lineup, as well seeing Santiago Moreno taking his first start of the season along with Yimmi Chara, the attacking game of the Rose City side was nonexistent despite a couple of near plays.

Despite the efforts of Felipe Mora and Diego Valeri’s shots at goal, Colorado’s keeper was there as William Yarborough had his moments with amazing game-saving blocks.

Once again Larrys Mabiala was beaten by a Brian Galvan pass that Diego Rubio scored the insurance goal in the 63rd minute. In the end, Steve Clark became the savior as he denied a shot on goal for Rubio that could have given him a brace and later Cole Bassett.

Once again, we’re back to injuries haunting the Portland Timbers with both Claudio Bravo not being able to suit up for the third straight game with a thigh injury and Sebastian Blanco being on the bench, but not participating in the game after getting a thigh injury on the Vancouver game.

The Timbers had a good possession percentage in their favor, but the overall shots is where they lacked the depth that could have turned this game more in their favor and more attacking possibilities.

Portland cannot let go of opportunities after letting their third Cascadia Cup slip and is now on the verge of losing their ability to play at home in the playoffs. Now, they are to face a San Jose side desperately looking to add points, in a game that will be crucial for the Timbers.
