The Portland Timbers have announced today that they have given manager Giovanni Savarese a multiyear contract extension. Savarese, heading into his sixth season in the helm for Portland, is now extended through 2025 with a club option in 2026.
“Gio has a proven track record of success in MLS, and we are excited to officially announce his extension as the head coach of the Portland Timbers,” technical director Ned Grabavoy said in a release. “We are thrilled that he’ll continue to be our on-field leader for years to come and he will certainly play a major role in helping the club continue to progress.”
Since his arrival in 2018, Savarese has led the Portland Timbers to two league finals (2018, 2021), by wining two Western Conference Championships in five seasons. Savarese also led the Timbers in 2020 to the MLS is Back Tournament title, leading the club into four postseasons in his five seasons in the club.
After Caleb Porter’s departure, the Timbers made him their third manager since the club’s inception into Major League Soccer and with an impressive CV in his time with the now-defunct NASL-version of the New York Cosmos winning three league shields.
In his time with the Rose City side, he has accumulated a record of 85 wins, 60 losses and 42 draws in all competitions including the postseason. In the end, Savarese is on path to become the longest-tenured coach in club history with six seasons at the helm.
Before the close of this season, the Portland Timbers are in advanced negotiations with Danish side FC Midtjylland, this addresses an issue for a creative winger- attacking midfielder Brazilian Evander for a record signing.
“This is something that has been in the works since the MLS Cup last season, and for me, what felt right was to stay in Portland,” said Savarese. “I love the passion and the energy that our fans bring, and I believe in Portland as a soccer city. I’m honored to lead this team and plan to continue to help the team be competitive and build something bigger so we can make the fans very proud.”
