FOXBOROUGH, MA–The New England Revolution have exercised their one-time buyout on forward Jozy Altidore
The move was completed this past weekend. Altidore reportedly did not appear at Revolution training this week, though he was available during the team’s 3-1 victory over Inter Miami CF on Saturday.
Jozy Altidore, 33, was bought out of Toronto FC on February 14th, 2022. Just hours later, Altidore chose the New England Revolution over Sporting Kansas City to become his newest MLS club.
During his tenure with the Revolution, Altidore managed to score 2 goals in 30 appearances, starting in 6 of those matches. 6 months into his 2022 season with New England, Altidore was struggling to find playing time. Following a meeting with head coach Bruce Arena, Altidore was loaned by New England to Mexican side Puebla for the rest of the season. While on loan, Altidore appeared in 6 matches, scoring 2 goals in 88 total minutes.
With the one-time buyout activated, Altidore’s contract is subsequently removed from the Revolution’s salary cap. Per Tom Bogert of The Athletic, New England has freed up a max-TAM deal for Altidore (more than $1.5 million). Along with the buyout, this move now allows Jozy Altidore to sign with any MLS team at a low salary or seek out to sign with any team internationally. Sources confirm that Greek Super League sides AEK Athens (1st place) and PAOK FC (4th place) have shown interest in signing the forward.
At a career glance, Altidore, who turns 34 this winter, has appeared in 203 MLS matches scoring 79 goals and 25 assists. He formerly has played for New York Red Bulls, Villarreal (Spain), Xerez (Spain), Hull City (England), Bursaspor (Turkey), Alkmaar Zaanstreek (Netherlands), Sunderland (England), Toronto FC, New England Revolution, & Puebla (Mexico).
Internationally, Altidore was a vital part of the United States Men’s National Team from 2007-2019 where the striker made 115 appearances, scoring 42 goals. He appeared in 1 World Cup and won the 2017 Concacaf Gold Cup.
The New England Revolution (8-6-3, 30 pts.) remain in Foxborough, MA to face Orlando City SC (7-5-4, 26 pts.) in an MLS Match on Saturday, June 17th. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
