I recall the words from a book that former Argentina National Team manager Cesar Luis Menotti wrote where he stated, “The success of every team is in its player’s brethren and all around unity. That mystic is a recipe for success in every team. Regardless of the number of superstar players you have, if unity does not exist forget it.” What he means in this first paragraphs is the way manager Giovanni Savarese in his Tuesdays press conferences has stated how the unity his squad has shown up lately. With three back-to-back wins and breaking the dominance of the San Jose Earthquakes at home this tells us many of the fruitful are a result of policies and strategies instituted since day one.
For manager Savarese it is a first, always exposed to many new things and so far, his Timbers have deliver. As the San Jose, game is outdated and now focuses on his first rivalry week match. Despite playing at home manager Savarese is well aware of the heated rivalry both Portland and Seattle squads stage. With these two squads celebrating their 100th match ever which dates back to the original NASL, the Pacific League and modern day Major League Soccer.
With his first Cascadia Derby in the works, the Timbers rookie manager has a stand out his squad with some all-around achievements as a team. Seeing how the Timbers are working together as they can achieve bigger things and growing more confident.
Still there are many things to correct. Among one of them is the number of yellow cards in last weekend’s match. Despite the discipline, this squad has been exposed lately in the field. However some work to prevent this type of situations that can lead to a suspension with this accumulations. With a two unsporting behaviors and time wasting and a not retreating one put several notable players in a dire situation in their next compromises.
To conclude the way things are going for the Rose City squad under manager Savarese one could expect more favorable results down the road. The Timbers are currently tied on points with sixth-place Houston Dynamo (11 points) but are narrowly behind them on goals scored for the final playoff spot (18 to 13). Hard work and all around unity are the utmost factors of this squad’s sudden revival. That in turn has led success and confidence in its game as results speak for themselves.
Now onto their next challenge in the upcoming Cascadia Derby, being another test of fire for manager Giovanni Savarese and company. For them it is another test with a squad struggling to net points and the Rave Greens looking forward to upset the Timbers at home. In this campaign unity is the word for success for these Portland Timbers.
