The Deep Dish: Interesting Times

“Like it or not, we live in interesting times” — Robert F. Kennedy

PREFACE:  Once again, it’s little later than I anticipated this week since “life-outside-soccer” stuff took precedence earlier in the week. We also reiterate that while we hope that 2020 will be a better year for Chicago soccer, it may not be because the Red Stars won’t have Sam Kerr and the Fire still have Nelson Rodriguez.

SINCE LAST WE MET:  The Dax McCarty trade was made official as he went to Nashville SC for $100,000 in allocation money. Veljko Paunovic was sacked, and the Fire then sent Grant Lillard to Inter Miami for $75,000 of allocation money.

KERR LEAVES FOR CHELSEA:  Sam Kerr made her departure from the Red Stars official by signing with Chelsea on Wednesday.

“On behalf of everyone at the Red Stars and our supporters we want to thank Sam for her commitment and contributions to Chicago over the past 2 years,” Red Stars Owner Arnim Whisler said. “We wish Sam all the best on the next step in her journey. Sam’s spirit, grit, talent, and humor are very special and will be missed.”

“We wish Sam nothing but the best,” Red Stars Head Coach Rory Dames said. “She is an incredible person on and off the field and we will continue to support her from Chicago.”

Kerr scored 34 goals in two seasons with the Red Stars winning the NWSL’s Golden Boot both years. She was named league MVP this past season as well.

“The [Women’s Super League] is the best league in Europe,” said Kerr. “I want team success and I don’t want it to come easy.

“I feel Chelsea have been building something special over the years and I want to be a part of that – I want to lift some trophies.”

INTERESTING TIMES:  So the Fire are looking for a new coach, identity, and core as they return to Soldier Field in 2020. The Red Stars are looking to find a way to replace their best player from the last two seasons. This will be an interesting offseason in Chicago.
