With Major League Soccer unveiling the full 2021 season schedule, the Portland Timbers will be opening their campaign on the road on April 18 against their Cascadia foe the Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
This news comes on the travel restrictions between the U.S. and Canada, the Whitecaps will host matches at Rio Tinto Stadium until a new announcement of a return to their home market in BC Place is permitted.
The television schedule for the Timbers this season will be with at least 10 games broadcast nationally, with 5 games on the road and five at home via ABC and ESPN. The highlight of those games is the always contested Cascadia Derby as all three matches against the Seattle Sounders will be nationally televised.
On the local scene 16 games will be televised by FOX 12 and the other eight on ROOT Sports.
The Portland Timbers will face just two Eastern conference opponents this season, traveling to Philadelphia on May 30 and then on October 3 to play Inter Miami for the first time in team history.
In addition to first-time meetings, the Rose City side will square off against conference rival and expansion side Austin FC twice on the road at Q2 Stadium on July 3 and August 21 and Decision Day at Providence Park on November 7.
Still, the Portland Timbers will have to play host to Club C.D. Marathon in a round of 16 of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League matches, traveling to San Pedro Sula on April 6 and returning to Providence Park on April 13.
