Switzerland Punishes Ecuador with 10-1 Rout

Switzerland earned it’s first-ever victory in the Women’s World Cup with a 10-1 rout of Ecuador in Vancouver on Friday.

Fabienne Humm broke the record for the fastest hat trick, netting three goals in five minutes, while teammate Ramona Bachmann also scored a hat trick in the match.

Angie Ponce of Ecuador actually also scored a hat trick, as she had two own goals attributed to her, along with converting a penalty kick.

Switzerland’s first goal came in the 24th minute, with an own goal by Ponce. Eseosa Aigbogun netted the second in first half stoppage time, giving the Swiss a 2-0 lead at the break.

After the break, the Swiss scored early and often, with Humm going to work to score at 47th minute, followed by two more goals within five minutes. Bachman took over from there, converting a penalty kick at 60th minute, followed by another goal just one minute later.

Ecuador finally got one the board, as Ponce scored the first-ever Women’s World Cup goal for her country, with a penalty kick in the 64th minute.

But, Ponce again added to the Swiss score line with another own goal in the 71st minute.

Martina Moser made it a 9-1 lead with a goal in the 76th minute and Bachmann completed her hat trick and capped the scoring in the 81st minute.

Group play concludes for Switzerland on Tuesday against Cameroon, who sits alongside the Swiss in the second spot in Group C standings, both with three points. Ecuador sits at the bottom of the group and will have to face the current group leader and defending champion Japan.
