Bayern Munich were held by 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt, 2-2, at Commerzbank-Arena (neé Waldstadion) extending their win-less streak in all competitions to three. Their lead at the top of the table is two points after FC Köln won over FC Ingolstadt. With players coming back from international duty, Robert Lewandowski was on the bench while Arjen Robben started and Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng were in central defense together.
Bayern were in the ascendancy after 10 minutes when Arjen Robben made contact with his left foot and scored from an acute angle. After that though, Frankfurt were in the ascendancy the remainder of the first half. Timothy Chandler struck the post in the 15th minute and Alexander Meier had a headed chance saved by Manuel Neuer. Frankfurt’s persistence was rewarded in the 43rd minute after Szabolcs Huszti finished after a Jerome Boateng attempted clearance went right to the former to make it 1-1.
Joshua Kimmich restored Bayern’s advantage in the 62nd minute after collecting a pass from Hummels while unmarked. Three minutes later, Bayern were also a man up after Huszti picked up a second yellow for the smallest of headbutts against Renato Sanches. In the fracas the followed, Bayern’s Tom Starke was ordered from the technical area after shoving Chandler. Despite the man-disadvantage, Frankfurt managed to equalize when Chandler sent a cross to Marco Fabian who chested the ball in though replays suggest that Fabian was a foot offside.
Carlo Ancelotti bemoaned his side’s lack of a good attitude towards the match.
“We didn’t have a good attitude, that’s why we weren’t so strong,” said Ancelotti. “I hope it won’t happen again. The second half was better. At the end of the day the 2-2 draw is a just result.”
It’s back to the UEFA Champion League on Wednesday when Bayern host PSV Enidhoven at 1:45pm Central time. The match will be online at FoxSoccer2Go.com.
