SEATTLE — Chad Marshall’s first half score and rookie Jordan Morris’ first career goal led Seattle Sounders FC (2-3-1, 7 pts) to a 2-1 win over a 10-man Philadelphia Union (3-3-0, 9 pts) side. Former Sounder Sebastien Le Toux notched the Union’s lone tally.
Seattle took a 1-0 lead with four minutes left in the first half on Marshall’s second goal of the year. Andreas Ivanschitz curled his corner kick to the veteran defender. Marshall headed the ball past Union goalkeeper Andre Blake to become Seattle’s leading scorer.
Morris doubled the Sounders’ goal total in the 71st minute. Ivanschitz lofted a left-footed pass that allowed the young striker to outrace his defender. Morris eased his shot inside the left post to record his first-ever league goal.
The visitors played a man down after midfielder Roland Alberg received his second yellow of the night eight minutes into the second half from referee Drew Fischer. Alberg scissored Sounders FC midfielder Cristian Roldan from behind. His tackle was considered dangerous enough to warrant a second caution and subsequent red card ejection.
Le Toux scored in the 73rd minute to decrease the home team’s advantage to a single goal. Fabinho’s cross into the box found C.J. Sapong to the right of the Seattle goal. He sent a pass back to an open Le Toux. The Union midfielder vaulted the ball past Frei for his second goal of the season. Le Toux suffered a leg injury on the scoring play and limped off the pitch to end his night.
The first half was played at a blistering pace. The two sides combined for 16 shots, with Seattle holding the edge with 10. Blake’s acrobatic saves in the opening half prevented the Sounders from taking at least a two-goal lead. By the end of the match, Blake had faced 19 shots and made seven saves.
Seattle returns to action on Saturday, April 23 when they play the Rapids in Colorado. The Union returns home to host NYCFC on the same day.
