Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-3 Seattle Sounders FC

VANCOUVER, BC–Seattle Sounders FC came from behind to defeat the Vancouver Whitecaps in a Cascadia Cup derby, 3-2, to keep pace with Western Conference leaders St. Louis who are three points ahead of the Sounders. The Whitecaps, meanwhile, just stay above the playoff line in ninth ahead on goal difference over Sporting Kansas City.

Ranko Veselinovic opened the scoring in the 24th minute heading in a free kick from Ryan Gauld to give the Whitecaps the lead. After a listless first half from the Sounders by anyone apart from Stefan Cleveland (in place of the injured Stefan Frei), they would come alive and equalize in the 60th minute. Leo Chu scored off a Nico Lodeiro corner after a flick-on by Jackson Ragen.

Vancouver took the lead again in the 72nd minute via Route 1 as Yohei Takaoka’s long ball was flicked on by Brian White to send Ryan Gauld on his way to make the score 2-1. That lead would last just four minutes, though, as Leo Chu netted his second of the night again from a Lodeiro set piece, again a set up header from Ragen, and again being right place at the right time.

The Whitecaps would go down to ten men in the 89th minute as Mathias Laborda picked up a second yellow. Two minutes after that, Chu would become setup man for the match winner for Yeimar and the Sounders take all three points back home and stay in the Cascadia Cup hunt on four points, Vancouver stays at six, and Portland leads with seven with all three teams having played four matches.
