Seattle Sounders rout Portland Timbers 6-2 at Providence Park

The Seattle Sounders earned a stunning 6-2 victory at Providence Park today against their Cascadian nemesis, The Portland Timbers. The match saw the biggest away crowd this season has seen at Providence Park, filling the away seats completely. The match was sold out, even as the Delta variant of Covid 19 is ravaging the country bringing back old restrictions.

The game was very disputed with the Sounders getting ahead 2-0 in the first half two goals by Fredy Montero (minutes 13 and 29). Portland shortened the distance with a goal by Sebastián Blanco at minute 32, and with that 2-1 score players ended the first half.

Second half started with the same intensity level as the first with the teams going toe to toe, and Portland was able to win a partial 2-2 tie, with a goal by midfielder George Fochive in minute 52. That was the end of the competition. Seattle took over from there with forward Raúl Ruidíaz scoring on 55, and 72, for a 4-2 lead.

Portland looked like didn’t have any answers to Seattle’s play, Jimmy Medranda in minute 77, extended the lead, and Nicolás Benezet put the icing on the cake, with a late goal in stoppage time.

A final result of 6-2, one result that will live on in MLS top rivalry history books.
