DC United 2-1 Chicago Fire
WASHINGTON, DC–If DC United make the playoffs this season, it will be in large part because of Wayne Rooney. Rooney scored a couple more goals as DC came from behind to defeat the Fire, 2-1.
It is the first time this season the Fire have lost a match despite scoring first and also their 10th away loss of the season. DC, meanwhile, have won their 10th home match of the season and are now just two points behind Montreal for sixth place with two matches in hand.
DC thought they had scored in the 21st minute through Rooney, but the goal was disallowed after the VAR spotted an infringement by Luciano Acosta in the lead up. Ulises Segura hit one off the crossbar in the 39th minute.
The Fire would go in front in the 51st minute after Raheem Edwards cut past one defender in the area and turned another before beating Bill Hamid near post. The lead would last 11 minutes, though, as Rooney pounced on his own rebound after an initial save by Stefan Cleveland.
DC would take the lead for good nine minutes from time after Junior Moreno drew a penalty from Johan Kappelhof and Rooney converting the spot kick.
The Fire are next in action in two weeks’ time at Atlanta United at 2pm CT on ESPN while DC host FC Dallas this Saturday at 3:55pm CT on Univision.
