Rhode Island draw 6th time this season versus Sacramento Republic

SMITHFIELD, RI— Rhode Island FC (1-6-2, 9 pts.) and Sacramento Republic FC (5-5-0, 20 pts.) battled to a scoreless draw on Saturday.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Beirne Stadium in Smithfield, Rhode Island to a crowd of 4,000.

The team started their lineup in a 3-5-2 formation with goalkeeper Koke Vegas starting in the net with a backline of Gabriel Alves (left), Karifa Yao (center) and Frank Nodarse (right). The midfield consisted of Prince Saydee (left) Clay Holstad (left center mid), Marc Ybarra (central), Jack Panayotou (right center mid) and Stephen Turnbull (right). The forward roles were manned by Albert Dikwa (left) and Noah Fuson (right).

This is Jack Panayotou’s RIFC debut.

Rhode Island had 3 players out due to injury. They included Grant Stoneman (Leg), Conor McGlynn (Leg), and Amos Shapiro-Thompson (Knee).

The match began with Sacramento starting from the center circle. They elected to play the ball backwards and immediately launch it into the RIFC defensive third.

RIFC had the first moment of the match when Jack Panayotou’s left-footed effort in the 4th minute went just wide of the right post.

Sacramento then had their first chance less than a minute later when forward #40 Aldair Sanchez’ effort went wide of the left post.

RIFC then had a massive chance in the 10th minute when Clay Holstad’s long-distance save was met with a stellar save by goalkeeper #90 Jared Mazzola.

Albert Dikwa then had a headed effort that was off target in the 15th minute that went out for a goal kick.

As the match entered the 17th minute, RIFC had yet another chance that struck the crossbar and out for a goalkick.

Entering the 31st minute, RIFC took the early lead.

After receiving the ball from Clay Holstad, Stephen Turnbull settled the ball and buried it into the bottom right corner for the 1-0 advantage.

Just two minutes later, Sacramento had a chance of their own via freekick that was met with a catch save by Koke Vegas.

Entering the 38th minute, Sacramento leveled the scoreline.

After midfielder #11 Russell Cicerone laid the ball off to defender #2 Jack Gurr, he then sent the ball into the area and found the head of forward #7 Trevor Amann to level the match with his 6th goal of the season.

Just 4 minutes later, RIFC regained the lead.

Following a corner kick delivery by Jack Panayotou, the ball was met with a strong header by Karifa Yao and into the net past goalkeeper #90 Jared Mazzola for his first goal of the season.

Just one minute later, Noah Fuson almost added to RIFC’s lead, however, his shot was blocked out for a corner kick.

After the 45+3 minutes, the match entered halftime with Rhode Island ahead 2-1.

Prior to the start of the second half, Sacramento head coach Mark Briggs made his first two changes of the match by replacing midfielder #20 Aldair Sanchez and forward #20 Blake Willey and replaced them with defenders #3 Damià Viader and #4 Lee Desmond.

The second half began with Rhode Island FC starting from the center circle. They elected to build out of the back to begin the second half.

RIFC had the first chance of the second half when Prince Saydee had a clear chance to score in the 47th minute and sent it over the bar. It quite literally should have been an easy tap-in finish.

In the 61st minute, RIFC defender Gabriel Alves was issued a yellow card.

Entering the 66th minute, Sacramento head coach Mark Briggs made his next two changes of the match by replacing forward #11 Russell Cicerone and defender #24 Conor Donovan with forward #23 Kieran Phillips and midfielder #15 Rafael Jauregui.

In the 67th minute, RIFC defender Stephen Turnbull was issued a yellow card.

RIFC’s next chance came in the 69th minute when Albert Dikwa’s effort was met with a save out for a corner kick.

Entering the 72nd minute, RIFC head coach Khano Smith made his first two changes of the match by replacing Albert Dikwa and Stephen Turnbull with Collin Smith and Jojea Kwizera.

In the 76th minute, RIFC defender Karifa Yao was issued a yellow card.

As the match entered the 81st minute, both sides made changes. RIFC replaced Prince Saydee and Jack Panayotou with JJ Williams and Isaac Angking, while Sacramento replaced defender #6 Shane Wiedt with forward #9 Juan Herrera.

RIFC had yet another chance in the 84th minute when JJ Williams close range effort was met with a kick save and cleared.

As the match entered the 89th minute, both sides made changes. RIFC replaced Noah Fuson with Joe Brito, while Sacramento replaced forward #7 Trevor Amann with defender #17 Jonathan Ricketts.

Entering the 90+3 minute, Sacramento leveled the scoreline.

After a freekick delivery by defender #2 Jack Gurr, the ball was cleared and met with a long shot by midfielder #19 Nick Ross. The ball was then deflected and kicked home by defender #19 Jonathan Ricketts to level the scoreline.

In the 90+5 minute, Sacramento forward #9 Juan Herrera was issued a yellow card.

Sacramento had a chance to take the 3-2 advantage when they had back-to-back corner kicks that were met with clearances.

After the 90+9 minutes, the match ended in the 2-2 draw.

With the result, RIFC remain slotted in 10th place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference.

That is RIFC’s 6th draw this season.

Rhode Island FC (1-6-2, 9 pts. in USL Championship) are away to Denver, Colorado to home to face Western Conference side Colorado Springs Switchbacks (5-4-0, 19pts.) at Weidner Field. The match kicks off on Friday, May 17th at 9:00p.m. on ESPN+.
