The New England Revolution would face off against Inter Miami in the final match of the 2021 regular season. Excitement was on the air and Gillette Stadium was filled with the Revolution’s largest crowd of the season. Over 31,000 fans poured in through the gates for the final send off before the post-season and for the team to be awarded the Supporter’s Shield for the first time in club history.
The Revs would dominate a majority of the game. Outshooting their opponents 16-7, but only able to find the target 3 times on the day.
After a scoreless first half, Inter Miami’s Blaise Matuidi would give the away side the go ahead goal in the 58th minute of the contest. On a broken play that started with a cross, Matuidi was able to find the loose ball, and hitting a change-up like shot that found its way past Matt Turner.
While they had their chances, the Revs were unable to even the score and would drop the match 1-0. Neither team gained anything with a result today. The Revs look forward to the 2021 playoffs while Miami’s season comes to an end with the conclusion of tonight’s match.
The Revolution will have home field advantage throughout the 2021 post-season. They currently await the round one matchup between NYCFC and Atlanta United.
Following the match, the Revolution were awarded the Supporter’s Shield. The team had clinched this a few weeks back while on their away trip to Orlando, but were now presented their trophy with the conclusion of the MLS Regular Season. This marks the first of it’s kind for the Revs and marks their spot in MLS history with the most successful season at 73 points.
