Revolution reportedly in “two-horse race” to sign Julian Gressel

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution have reportedly expressed interest in signing German wingback Julian Gressel.

He would occupy a senior roster slot and is currently a free agent in MLS.

Julian Gressel is a 29-year-old, 6’1, 185lb outside back from Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany.

At a career glance, Julian Gressel played 4 professional seasons in the German fifth tier prior to joining and committing 4 years at Providence College. After his time in Providence, Gressel was selected 8th overall in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.

At the club level, Gressel has played 278 career games (21,457 minutes) across Major League Soccer with Atlanta United (2017-2019), D.C. United (2020-2022), Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2022-23), and Columbus Crew (2023).

Internationally, Gressel has made 6 appearances for the United States Men’s National Team.

In career numbers, the wingback has contributed 33 career goals, 64 assists, along with 28 yellow cards and 0 red cards.

In career honors, Gressel was the 2017 MLS Rookie of the Year. He also is a 2x MLS Cup Champion (Atlanta & Columbus), a 2x Canadian Champion (Vancouver), a U.S. Open Cup Champion (Atlanta), a Campeones Cup Champion (Atlanta), and was named recipient of the George Gross Memorial Trophy (Vancouver).

According to journalists Tom Bogert and Paul Tenorio of The Athletic, The New England Revolution are reportedly in a “two-horse race” with Inter Miami CF to sign Julian Gressel.

It is also being reported that Gressel wants to be closer to family, so New England was in the cards regardless of teams that were interested.
