Revolution II victorious over FC Cincinnati II in shootout after 10 goal thriller

FOXBOROUGH, MA— The New England Revolution II (4-2-0, 12 pts.) tied FC Cincinnati II (2-1-2, 9 pts) in a 5-5 match, but defeated them 5-4 in penalties on Sunday afternoon.

The match kicked off at 5:00 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The team started their lineup in a 4-4-2 formation with goalkeeper Max Weinstein starting in the net with a backline of (left back) Peyton Miller, (center backs) Pierre Cayet and Tiago Suarez, along with (right back) Victor Souza. The midfield consisted of Marcos Dias (left), Jack Panayotou and Joshua Boma (center), and Malcolm Fry (right). The forward roles were manned by Damian Rivera (left), Jordan Adebayo-Smith (right)

The squad today featured 3 first-team players with Joshua Bolma, Damian Rivera, and Jack Panayotou starting the match.

The match kicked off with FC Cincinnati starting from the midfielder kickoff and moving the ball swiftly behind their backline.

The first moment of the match came in the 11th minute when midfielder Damian Rivera won the ball back in the FC Cincinnati defensive left third near their own corner. Rivera took two touches before centering the ball to find winger Marcos Dias inside the box. His effort struck the FC Cincinnati cross bar and out for a goal kick.

Just three minutes later, in the 15th minute, the Revolution broke through for the 1-0 lead.

Following combination play with Jack Panayotou, Victor Souza received the ball inside the Cincinnati penalty area and played it back to Panayotou. He then played a square pass to Damian Rivera outside the penalty area. He took one touch past a defender and into the area before uncorking a left-footed rocket past Cincinnati goalkeeper #25 Paul Walters.

Two minutes later, the Revolution continued their attacking threat on Cincinnati and received a penalty kick.

Forward Marcos Dias found forward Jordan Adebayo-Smith inside the penalty area. He took one touch and made himself off balance. His awkward shot struck the hand of sliding defender #40 Kai Thomas.

Forward Marcos Dias stepped up to take the penalty kick and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner past #25 Paul Walters for the 2-0 lead.

Four minutes later, FC Cincinnati pulled one back.

As the Revolution were building out of the back, defender Victor Souza was intercepted by a slide tackling #77 J. Govea. His tackle popped the ball directly to #29 Arquímides Ordondez, who took one touch before slotting the ball past Max Weinstein.

Nine minutes later, FC Cincinnati leveled the match.

#29 Arquímides Ordondez managed to take on Victor Souza, Tiago Suarez, and Joshua Bolma before shooting a low-driven shot into the bottom right-hand corner past goalkeeper Max Weinstein.

Ten minutes later, the Revolution regained the lead.

After winning the ball in midfield, Joshua Bolma played a pass to Damian Rivera. He took 3 touches before sending a through ball to Jordan Adebayo-Smith. He took 2 touches and then took a left-footed shot that snuck by #25 Paul Walters.

After the goal, with little to no action in the final 4 minutes, the match entered halftime with the New England Revolution ahead of FC Cincinnati 3-2.

The second half began with the Jordan Adebayo-Smith taking the midfield kickoff and sending it to Joshua Bolma. He then sent the ball into the FC Cincinatti defensive third to begin the Revolution’s attack.

Seven minutes into the 2nd half, FC Cincinnati leveled the match once again.

Following yet another error while building out of the back, #41 Salim Adams intercepted the ball and made it bounce directly back to #43 Jesús Castellano. His square pass back to #41 Salim Adams led to his one-time finish past Max Weinstein to level the match.

Nine minutes later, in the 61st minute, FC Cincinnati took the lead for the first time in the match.

Directly off of a corner kick, FC Cincinnati defender #40 Kai Thomas beat Victor Souza for the header as he struck it with power past Weinstein.

Following the goal, in the 63rd minute, Revolution head coach Clint Peay made his first substitution of the match by replacing Joshua Bolma with Ben Awashie.

In the 69th minute, during yet another corner kick, FC Cincinatti won the first delivery ball and headed the ball directly off of the left post. The ball was then cleared out by defender Victor Souza.

In 71st minute, Revolution head coach Clint Peay made his second substitution of the match by replacing Santiago Suarez for Colby Quinones.

Just a minute later, Revolution midfielder Ben Awashie entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a harsh foul.

Four minutes later, in the 75th minute, the Revolution leveled the match.

After receiving the ball from Marcos Dias, Damian Rivera took on two defenders and played a curler into the bottom right corner around 3 FC Cincinnati defenders to level the match.

Six minutes later, in the 81st minute, the Revolution had a close range shot saved and the rebound managed to strike the post following an ensuing corner kick.

Just two minutes later, in the 83rd minute, the Revolution drew yet another penalty kick.

After a header by Marcos Dias was lofted into the area, Jordan Adebayo-Smith was taken down by an outstretched leg of #37 Stiven Jiminez

Marcos Dias stepped up to take the penalty and slotted it into the bottom left corner past #25 Paul Walters, who dove the other way.

The Revolution thought they were going to run away with all 3 points, however, just 4 minutes later, in 90th minute, the match was leveled once again.

After FC Cincinnati defender #40 Kai Thomas played a through ball to find #61 Nicholas Samways, his cross deflected off of the outstretched leg of defender Pierre Cayet. The ball went directly into the goal past goalkeeper Max Weinstein who dove forward into the six-yard box rather than staying directly on his post.

Following the 90 minutes and added time, in MLS NEXT Pro, the match ends in a penalty shootout. The winner of the shootout leaves the match with two points, while the loser of the shootout leaves with one point.

FC Cincinnati stepped up to take the first penalty kick. #29 Arquímides Ordondez converted the shot past Max Weinstein into the bottom left corner for the 1-0 lead.

The Revolution’s first penalty kick taker was Marcos Dias, who had already scored 2 penalties in regulation. His shot was also converted into the bottom left corner past #25 Paul Walters to level it 1-1.

FC Cincinatti’s second penalty kick taker was #44 Benjamin Stitz. His left-footed shot went into the bottom right corner past Weinstein to regain the 2-1 lead.

The Revolution’s second penalty kick taker was Jack Panayotou. His right footed shot was also converted into the bottom left corner past #25 Paul Walters to level it 2-2.

FC Cincinatti’s third penalty kick taker was #43 Jesus Castellanos. His right-footed shot struck the cross bar and was missed.

Revolution forward Jordan Adebayo-Smith stepped up to take the third penalty kick, and his right footed shot went into the bottom right corner to give the Revolution the 3-2 advantage.

Next up for FC Cincinnati was #3 Joey Akpunonu. His right footed shot went into the bottom right corner to level the scoreline 3-3.

Revolution defender Peyton Miller then stepped up to take the fourth penalty kick, and his left footed shot went into the bottom left corner for the 4-3 advantage.

Next up for FC Cincinnati was #40 Kai Thomas. His right footed shot went into the bottom right corner to level the scoreline 4-4.

To win the match, Damian Rivera stepped up to take the fifth and final penalty but sent the ball over the crossbar.

Next up for FC Cincinatti was #61 Nicholas Samways. His right footed shot into the bottom right corner was SAVED by Weinstein!

Revolution midfielder Ben Awashie stepped up next to take the kick and managed to slot the ball into the left corner with a right footed shot to win the match for the Revolution.

The match is officially the highest scoring match in MLS NEXT Pro history.

The New England Revolution II finished the match with 43% possession, 23 shots (9 on target), 333 total passes (79.0% accuracy), 7 crosses, 5 corners, and 2 offsides. Defensively the squad had 55 duels won, 5 tackles won, 6 saves, 18 clearances, 8 fouls, and 1 yellow cards.
