Revolution fail to secure 3 points, settle with draw versus Columbus

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution (5-2-1, 17 pts.) were held to a 1-1 draw in a match on Saturday night versus the Columbus Crew (4-2-2, 14 pts.).

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio to a sold-out crowd of 20,562.

The team started their lineup in a 4-3-3 formation with Đorđe Petrović starting in net with a backline of (left back) DeJuan Jones, (center backs) Dave Romney and Andrew Farrell, along with (right back) Brandon Bye. The midfield consisted of Latif Blessing (left midfield), Matt Polster (right midfield), and captain Carles Gil (center attacking midfield) The attacking roles were manned by Dylan Borrero (left wing), Esmir Bajraktarević (right winger) and Giacomo Vrioni as the lone striker.

On the injury front, forwards Gustavo Bou and Bobby Wood were left out of the squad due to injuries that they had picked up in training. Defender Henry Kessler remained out of the squad due to a right hamstring injury that he sustained in last week’s 4-0 victory over CF Montréal. Kessler’s is a precautionary measure.

Due to the injuries, forwards Esmir Bajraktarevic & Giacomo Vrioni earned their 2nd starts of the season and defender Andrew Farrell made his first start of the season.

The match began with the Revolution starting with the midfield kickoff. Giacomo Vrioni took the midfield kick and sent it straight back to defender Dave Romney, who sent the ball all the way up into the Columbus attacking third.

The first moment of the match came in the 11th minute when defender DeJuan Jones drove into space on the left flank of the field. He cut inside and played a pass that split two defenders and found Giacomo Vrioni in space. His left footed effort went through the goal mouth and out for a corner kick. Video replay showed that Columbus goalkeeper #27 Patrick Schulte did just enough to get a fingertip on the ball to deflect it for the corner kick.

In the 23rd minute, Columbus Crew defender #20 Alexandru Mățan entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a simulation.

5 minutes later in the 28th minute, Columbus had their first major attacking moment of the match. Following a foul, Columbus had won a freekick on the left side of the field. #20 Alexandru Mățan took the kick and played a low driven ball to the top of the box. The designed play was trapped by #17 Christian Ramirez and was left for #10 Lucas Zelarayan. His volley was met by a fantastic save by Dorde Petrovic out for a corner kick.

Ten minutes later in the 38th minute, New England continued their attack on the Columbus defense. Starting from the defensive third, defender Dave Romney found DeJuan Jones in space. He then looked left and played an outlet ball to midfielder Carles Gil. He then took one touch and played a lofted ball into space to find forward Giacomo Vrioni in behind the Columbus defense. Giacomo took one touch to control and then attempted a lofted chip over Columbus’ goalkeeper #27 Patrick Schulte. The ball then struck the Columbus crossbar and was cleared out to midfield by #12 Gustavo Vallecilla.

In the 43rd minute, Columbus Crew defender #5 Miloš Degenek entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a foul on DeJuan Jones. The foul was a hand to the face of DeJuan Jones, who was driving toward the Columbus penalty area. The play was not reviewed for foul conduct.

In the 45th minute, the Revolution had their last major attack of the half as midfielder Carles Gil tried to break the deadlock on his own. Driving atop the 18-yard box, Carles’ left footed curled attempt and was saved by a diving #27 Patrick Schulte. The ball then found Dylan Borrero inside the six-yard box, and his effort was sent over the crossbar.

Following this attack, the match entered halftime 0-0.

The second half began with Columbus Crew starting with the midfield kickoff with the ball being slowly moved up the field before turning it over moments later.

The first moment for the Revolution in the second half came in the 52nd minute when Esmir Bajraktarević found Brandon Bye behind him in space. Bye then sent a right footed service into the box which found Carles Gil, who flicked the ball with the outside of his boot towards the Columbus goal… Columbus’ goalkeeper #27 Patrick Schulte had to be quick with his reflexes as he stopped the shot from entering the bottom right corner out for a corner kick.

In the 56th minute, New England Revolution midfielder Dylan Borrero entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for arguing with center official Chris Penso. The argument was in regard to a call that led to a Columbus goal kick. Borrero wanted a corner kick to be called and was given a yellow card for his troubles.

Two minutes later, New England broke the deadlock.

In the 57th minute, midfielder Latif Blessing found captain Carles Gil on the left side of the field. Gil swiftly found Dylan Borrero just ahead of him. Borrero drove toward #12 Gustavo Vallecilla and sent a low driven left-footed cross toward Giacomo Vrioni. The ball however did not reach Vrioni and was met by Columbus’ center back #5 Miloš Degenek. The defender attempt to one-time clear the ball with his right foot, but unfortunately his attempt deflected back off of his left foot and back into his own goal, giving New England the 1-0 advantage.

4 minutes later, Columbus called on their goalkeeper once again to save them from New England’s attacking prowess. Midfielder Dylan Borrero found defender DeJuan Jones entering the penalty area and was met with a spectacular save by #27 Patrick Schulte.

In the 63rd minute, Head Coach Bruce Arena made his first substitution of the match as forward Esmir Bajraktarević was replaced by midfielder Noel Buck.

Just two minutes later, New England ran into trouble.

Entering the 65th minute, Columbus began moving the ball around the left flank of their defensive third. As #23 Mohamed Farsi began dribbling up the field, New England midfielder Dylan Borrero made a scissor-like attempt on the ball and caught the leg of Farsi. This prompted center official Chris Penso to give Borrero his second yellow card of the match, resulting in a red card. New England would play the remainder of the match with only 10 men.

Due to the red card to Borrero, Columbus began attacking at a higher degree and pushing the Revolution back into a defensive structure.

In the 76th minute, Head Coach Bruce Arena made his second substitution of the match as forward Giacomo Vrioni was replaced by forward Jozy Altidore.

Entering the 80th minute, #14 Yaw Yeboah played a ball down the right flank of the Revolution defensive third and found #23 Mohamed Farsi. Farsi then played a low driven ball into the New England penalty area which was met by a block by defender Dave Romney. The ball then popped out to #20 Alexandru Mățan, who faked a right footed shot and sent midfielder Matt Polster sliding away. He then cut to his left foot and unleashed an un-contested shot which was saved by Petrović.

In the 83rd minute, Head Coach Bruce Arena made his third and final substitution of the match as midfielder Latif Blessing was replaced by midfielder Emmanuel Boateng.

4 minutes later, in the 85th minute, Columbus midfielder #10 Lucas Zelarayan unleashed a shot of his own which deflected off of defender Dave Romney and clipped the top of the crossbar out for a corner.

Entering the 89th minute, drama ensued after a service into the area was protested by Columbus for a hand ball. The play was officially stopped at 89:09 after VAR reviewed the possible handball in the box on Revolution defender Andrew Farrell.

Entering the 90th minute, the 4th official indicated that there would be a minimum of 5 minutes of stoppage time.

Following the 2 minute and 39 second check for handball, the play resumed with no penalty kick awarded to Columbus at 92:09.

At the 97:49 minute mark, Columbus drew level.

Midfielder#23 Mohamed Farsi found #10 Lucas Zelarayan atop the penalty area. He then sent a chipped ball into the Revolution penalty area. His service was met with a header by #25 Sean Zawadzki past Revolution goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović.

Head Coach Bruce Arena was subsequently yellow carded after the goal was scored.

Following the goal and Arena’s yellow card, the Revolution kicked off from midfield, and center official Chris Penso blew the whistle for full time.

Following the match, Revolution Head Coach Bruce Arena had quite a few things to say about the officials.

In his postgame press conference, Arena stated, “I think the game management by the officiating crew and the VAR at the end was very poor… They scored, on my watch in the 98th minute. So, I’m disappointed with all of that.”

When reflecting on his yellow card, Arena stated, “I don’t know why I got a yellow card at the end of the game…. The fourth official was pretty useless the entire game and for some reason, she then voiced her opinion 98 and a half minutes into the game.”

This draw versus Columbus moves the New England Revolution into T-1st place in the Eastern Conference and 3rd place in the Supporter’s Shield race.

In regard to a historic mark, Revolution defender Andrew Farrell made his 307th appearance in MLS regular season play. This moment surpasses Cobi Jones (306) for fourth-most games played entirely for one club in MLS history.

The New England Revolution (5-2-1, 17 pts.) return home to Foxborough to face Sporting Kansas City (0-3-54, 3 pts.) at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, April 22. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
