The top flight of Mexican soccer took an unexpected vacation this weekend. Week 10 of the 2017 Clausura season was shut down due to the fact that the referees gathered and decided to not show up to any match. Liga MX President Enrique Bonilla issued a statement late last night after the Veracruz vs Puebla match was unexpectedly canceled.
“Good evening all, I’d like to announce that the Mexican Soccer Federation and the Liga MX informs that Week 10 of 2017 Clausura season has been suspended because the referees assigned for this week have all refused officiate. The decision was made unilaterally . The games will be rescheduled and an announcement at a later date with the new schedule will be made.”
Referees are upset at the Disciplinary Committee of the Mexican Soccer Federation. The referees feel that the committee was too lenient with Club America defender Pablo Cesar Aguilar’s 10-match suspension.
Last Wednesday night Club America suffered a 1-0 loss to Tijuana Xolos in the Round of 16 of the Copa MX. During the game Referee Fernando Hernandez Gomez issued America midfielder Javier Guemez a red card. Aguilar, the America captain was not pleased with the decision and had strong words for the referee. Played and continued and at the end of the match Aguilar felt there was more to say to Hernandez. Aguilar ran up to the referee and got in his face, contact has made between Aguilar’s chest and head with the referee’s body and Aguilar was then shown a post game red card.
A big mystery over what type of ban would Aguilar receive from the Disciplinary Committee ensued in the days after the match. On Friday afternoon it was announced that Aguilar would serve a 10 game suspension.
The decision was not what the referee wanted. They demand that the Club America defender be suspended for an entire year.
