Red Stars, Spirit Draw Blanks

Chicago Red Stars 0-0 Washington Spirit

BRIDGEVIEW, IL—In a match that was rescheduled from April, both teams had their chances to take the three points, but both ended up with one in a goalless draw at SeatGeek Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Red Stars went for the early lead in the first 20 minutes of the match, but the final touch ended up lacking or was stopped by Aubrey Kingsbury. Kingsbury would make five saves on the night for the Spirit. The closest the Red Stars got was in the 35th minute when Tatum Milazzo headed a Mallory Pugh free kick off the post.

Trinity Rodman came off the bench to start the second half for the Spirit and nearly got one of her own three minutes in she would shoot one off the woodwork. Ashley Hatch came even closer with a header from six yards out, but that chance was saved by Alyssa Naeher and cleared off the line by Milazzo.

In the end, both teams shared the points. It’s a point that feels earned according to Red Stars head coach Chris Petrucelli.

“Certainly, we wanted to take it to them in the first half,” said Petrucelli. “Clearly, when you saw [the Spirit]you knew what was coming in the second half for them. We didn’t go into the second half trying to survive, but they certainly have a good bit of play in the second half.”

“It’s hard. When you get a lot of chances and they’re not necessarily going in the back of the net, it’s hard to keep going,” said Danielle Colaprico. “But again, we do a good job as a team to keep going and put our heads down and keep trying to create those chances. It is a midweek game and it is hard to create those chances throughout the full 90 minutes, but I feel like we showed a lot a great things in this game and we’re only going to carry that over to the Orlando game on Sunday.”

Sunday at home against Orlando will make the third match in eight days for the Red Stars. Squad rotation may be in the cards on Sunday after making just three changes to the lineup from last Saturday’s win against OL Reign.

“As I see our team [on Wednesday], we have to freshen up the team a little bit,” said Petrucelli. “I was hoping the extra day would help us, but certainly we’re going to have to freshen up the team. We have players who didn’t get in [Wednesday] that have done quite well. So, we have got enough depth where we can rotate a little bit.”

The match against the Pride kicks off on Sunday at 5pm on Paramount+.
