Red Stars Pegged Back After Errant Backpass

0

BRIDGEVIEW, IL–The Red Stars appeared on their way to back-to-back wins, but a backpass gone away resulted in two points lost as the Washington Spirit managed a 1-1 draw at SeatGeek Stadium. Both teams have four points from three matches in the NWSL Fall Series with one match remaining for each—both against Sky Blue FC. The Spirit will take Sky Blue next Saturday.

After a goalless first half, the Red Stars were the more dangerous side in the second half and were finally rewarded in the 73rd minute. Sarah Luebbert sent a low cross the way of Savannah McCaskill who returned from suspension and netted her second of the Fall Series to put the hosts ahead.

Three points seemed certain for the Red Stars until the 88th minute. Camryn Biegalski’s back pass was intercepted by substitute Crystal Thomas who got past Alyssa Naeher and put it into an empty net for the equalizer. It was the Spirit’s third goal coming in the 88th minute or later in their last three games.

The Red Stars next play Sky Blue FC on Saturday, October 10th. Kickoff is at 11:30am CT on CBS All Access.
