ROCHESTER, NY—The Chicago Red Stars fell to their second straight defeat by the count of 2-0 to Western New York Flash in Rochester. The match was delayed 80 minutes due to severe weather.
When the match started, the Red Stars started strong and nearly opened the scoring in the 5th minute when Vanessa DiBernardo struck one off the crossbar.
It would be the hosts who would open the scoring in the 37th minute. After Jessica McDonald’s initial shot went off the post, Lianne Sanderson pounced on the rebound from close range. It was her first goal in her first match with the Flash.
The Flash nearly doubled the lead in the 64th minute, but Amanda Da Costa cleared a shot off the line and then another shot hit the post before the danger was eventually cleared. Ten minutes later, the Flash would double their advantage as Lynn Williams would convert from McDonald’s cross for the 2-0 advantage. Williams now is the league’s leading scorer with six.
The Flash also take second place from the Red Stars with the win tonight. The Red Stars next play away to the Washington Spirit at 6pm CT with the match streamed on YouTube.
